What is the Avatar Action Fund?
The Avatar Action Fund (AAF) is a nonprofit endeavor to raise awareness around sustainability issues through education and dialogue leading to positive social change. Donations to AAF are used to support the operations of the organization and to create a pool of grant money for groups needing assistance in efforts to raise critical consciousness around sustainability. Recipients of the grants will be chosen bi-annually through a community voting process facilitated by the AAF Board. This process puts the power to help make a difference in your hands as a Second Life citizen.
What does Positive Social Change mean?
While we in Second Life are pursuing fun, frolic, and fantasy, there are many in the real world who are suffering by having to live in unsustainable and unjust situations. Unfair labor practices, poverty and economic injustice, oppression of rights, and environmental hazards to individual and community health and future are some examples of what this means. Those who are fighting for social justice causes need our help, and if everyone just gave a few loose Lindens a day, we could help fund endeavors from information campaigns and fundraisers to legal opposition to injustice.
Who is behind the Avatar Action Fund?
The Fund was founded by Second Life citizen Sage Truss, who is currently, in her real life as a nonprofit IT manager, doing the diligence necessary to establish the Fund as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that can receive tax-deductible donations in the US (we can still grant money to groups without having this status). In the meantime, she is seeking working Board Members who can:
- Donate a minimum of L$6,000 per month to the Fund (approx. US$20);
- Help facilitate fundraisers and events for the Fund, and;
- Participate in the grant recipient selection process by helping with research of potential recipients and holding discussions about them.
If you are interested in becoming a Board Member, send an IM to Sage Truss in-world, or you can email her at sagetruss(at)gmail.com, and she will contact you to talk about your interest in serving in this role.
